EFT Tapping is a simple process of gently simulating specific energy points on the body along with saying certain statements related to the problem you wish to solve.

The science of EFT Tapping has been derived from ancient Chinese medicine and modern psychology. The step-by-step process of EFT Tapping has been elaborated further in this blog.

The basic theory behind EFT is that all negative emotions and behaviors, and many of the physical discomforts that they cause, are the result of disruptions to your body’s energy system.

If we think of something, and it brings about negative emotions in us, it means that our body’s energy has been disrupted because of that memory.

If your brain recognizes a similarity between a distressing situation from your past and what you are seeing or hearing in the moment- even though there is no current threat or danger- the same distress signals that you experienced in the earlier situation can become activated.

Though people often are not aware of it, this is one of the main causes of all the problems. EFT enables us to uncover those memories and heal them from the root, so that they don’t govern our present.

By tapping on the specific points on the body by keeping in the problem, EFT aims to balance the energy system of the body so that the emotional charge associated with the memory goes away.

Once the charge is released, the same memory will no longer produce disturbing emotions and we would be liberated from our conditioning and limiting beliefs.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (tapping) is clinically proven to lower stress, tension, anxiety, past-trauma to enable health, happiness and vitality.



Identify the problem that you want to overcome. It can be anything that is bothering you in life or something that you want to change.

It can be emotional reactions such as “to overcome my resentment towards my brother” or “to stay calm and relaxed even when my son is behaving notoriously.”

Or physical reactions such as “to stop these recurring headaches” or “to keep my heart from pounding so hard when I am about to speak in front of so many people.”

It can also be habits of thought, such as “to focus more on my strengths rather than my shortcomings” or “to stop overthinking every little thing if a friend doesn’t respond to my text.”

Or it can be patterns of behaviour, such as “to talk more politely”or “to scrolling through my mobile phone every few minutes.”

It can also be something much deeper than this, like a painful memory that’s been disturbing you, or any negative incident that has left an impact on you.

If you’re unsure about what issue you are facing then ask yourself these questions:

  • What am I stressed about? What is upsetting me? Who is upsetting me?
  • How does that make me feel? How does that really make me feel?
  • Where in my body do I feel this stress or upset? What kind of a sensation is it? How does that make me feel?


After you have selected the issue you want to work on, the next step is to measure its intensity.

Think of the problem and based on the discomfort you experience when you think about it, rate it on a scale of 1-10. (10=extreme and 1=nil)


Once you have a rating for your problem, you’re ready to tap on it.

For this, you make a statement that acknowledges that the problem exists (e.g. “Even though I have this excess weight”) and at the same time affirms that you accept yourself even though you have that problem (e.g. “I deeply love and accept myself.

While saying this statement, you work some points that move energy through your body.

Tap on the Karate Chop (side of the hand) of one hand gently with the fingers of the other hand, and say the statement out loud: “Even though I (state specific problem-what/who/how you feel/rating number), I deeply and completely accept and love myself.

Repeat this statement three times, while tapping on the Karate Chop simultaneously.


Tap each point multiple times as you say the problem from the statement. Repeat the key phrases out loud from the problem, such as the emotion of specifics about the problem, (e.g.  “this weight”, “I feel unlovable”, “I feel I am not pretty”, “I feel it my chest”, “It’s at a number 7”) while tapping on the points mentioned below:

  • Beginning of the eyebrows
  • Side of the eyes
  • Under the eyes
  • Under the nose
  • Under the lower lip
  • Below the collarbone corners
  • Under the arm
  • Thumb
  • Index Finger
  • Middle Finger
  • Little Finger

You can tap with either hand or both hands together.


After tapping on all the specific points, it’s time for the 9-gamut procedure. In this procedure, the gamut point is continuously tapped while nine simple steps are carried out.

The gamut point is the point below the knuckles of the little finger and middle finger, right at the center.

While holding onto the gamut point, perform the following steps:

  • Close your eyes
  • Open your eyes
  • Move your eyes down and to the right
  • Move your eyes down and to the left
  • Rotate your eyes clockwise
  • Rotate your eyes anti-clockwise
  • Hum any musical tune for a few seconds (e.g. happy birthday to you, twinkle twinkle little star)
  • Count from 1 to 5
  • Hum the tune again


After the 9-gamut procedure, repeat step 4 and tap on all the specific points while saying the main phrases/feelings about the problem.


Relax and take a few deep breaths. Drink a sip of water.


Close your eyes, bring the problem to your mind, and assess its intensity again. How much would you rate the problem now on a scale of 1-10?

If the rating has gone down, keep following the above steps until you reach the rating of 1.

Basic Recipe for EFT Tapping


EFT is helpful for anyone going through issues like stress, anxiety, depression, cravings, emotional eating, phobias, fears, health issues, emotional imbalance, acidity, IBS, trauma, abuse, heartbreak and even for fitness freaks. But EFT is not just for people who have issues.

EFT is also beneficial if:

Once you begin to apply EFT tapping on yourself, you may experience many doubts and questions regarding the process.

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from people who just started their tapping journey, just like you.


Is it necessary to tap on the exact points?

It is preferred, but not necessary to tap on the exact points. You may tap near the points, or even far away from the points, and still get some effect.

At the beginning, simply tap, without thinking too much about whether or not you’re on the exact points.

You can also place the EFT Tapping point diagram in front of you, or tap along with a video to make sure you tap the right points.


Is it important that I tap on every point?

No, it’s fine if you forget a point, skip it and tap the next point. Initially, it’s fine to skip a point or two. With practice, you will easily remember the exact points and tap them all.

Sometimes even experienced practitioners forget to tap a point if they become completely focused on a client.


How can you identify the underlying emotional issue for a surface issue or pain and how to create a statement that addresses the root cause? 

Learning to ask the right questions is the key to explore and identify the root cause.

Working on the surface pain and then questioning deeper will help you zero down to the root cause.


What if I don’t feel a change in my ratings?

If you can’t observe any change in your rating before and after tapping, then that’s okay. There are may be many reasons why this happens.

Part of you might be reluctant to confront the problem more strongly. Changes might be happening on a very subtle level for you to notice.

Your mind may have been convinced that EFT can’t work that fast, so it dismisses or minimizes real change.

You might be tapping on an associated problem, and not the real problem. You might be tapping on a surface issue, not yet having discovered a deeper issue which is the actual problem.

Some issues, like compulsions and addictions, have many deep layers that can take a long time to reveal themselves. You might need the guidance of a practitioner or a workshop to address this particular issue.

Don’t be discouraged if you finish a round of EFT and your rating hasn’t dropped at all.

You might also discover that when you think about the problem a day or two later, your rating has become lower. There may have been a delayed effect.

When your rating doesn’t go down, don’t conclude that EFT hasn’t worked or will never work. Sometimes it works subtly in the background or has a delayed effect.


What if I am unable to remember a specific event? 

Sometimes, you might feel bad emotionally or physically and find it difficult to link it to any specific event, and that’s fine.

One idea is to create an imaginary event in your mind. Perhaps your parents had a conflicted relationship when you were a child, but you can’t remember the details of any of their fights. 

If you try to use your imagination and create a likely scenario in your mind, you have a starting point for your EFT session.

You can also begin tapping without an event. For instance, you might be having an uneasy emotional feeling, and you may not be able to associate a clear event with it. In this case, simply tap on the uneasy feeling.


What if I have had many traumatic events in my history?

In this case, you may feel overwhelmed and clueless as to how you should begin. It’s fine, start with any one of them. You can begin with a particularly troubling one, or tap first on one of the least triggering events.

You can ask yourself if one event stands out in your memory, and tap on it. If you think you will be to handle the emotions that come up, you can work on the most disturbing memory first.

On the other hand, you may very well not want to remember the worst memory. In that case, you can work on the least severe memory, and tap only on that.

Another way is to tap on the first memory. Try to remember the very first negative incidents in your life, and start tapping on it.

When you tap on a particular memory and then tap on a few other ones, it’s likely that the emotional charge around all memories will diminish. This is because of our brain’s ability to make associations between similar events.


Will EFT work if my problem has existed for many years?

Yes, you’ll be surprised how effective EFT can be even if you’ve had a problem your whole life.

Many people with lifetime problems believe that EFT won’t work because nothing else has, but they are able to free themselves from an issue that has plagued them for many years.

You’ll find many examples of EFT working for pain that’s been troubling a person for decades, or clearing emotional baggage that’s been weighing someone down for years, or changing a limiting belief that’s kept someone stuck their whole life.


When should I work with an EFT practitioner?

You’ll find yourself easily solving problems by using EFT on yourself. But, in some cases, if you aren’t making any progress working alone, then you may consult a certified EFT practitioner.

You might also consider working with a practitioner who specializes in the condition or problem that you want to solve. Most practitioners develop specialities after certain years of experience.

Another reason why you may get in touch with an EFT Practitioner is when you suspect yourself having a severe or serious condition which needs immediate support.
