Have you ever told someone to just "talk it out" when they're going through a tough time? Maybe you've been advised to "let it out" and share your feelings?

Talking often feels like a simple way to deal with your emotions. There's this common belief that expressing ourselves verbally can lighten the emotional load, at least for a bit.

Now, picture "Talk Therapy." It's a widely used approach where you talk to trained professionals in a safe space. You can open up about your struggles, letting it all out without fearing judgment.

Then, there's EFT Tapping, a comforting way to ease intense emotions. It zooms in on fears and anxieties, providing an effective route to emotional relief.

Emotional Freedom Technique values the power of words and emotions in healing, using them to bring emotional freedom and peace of mind. One of the two most basic components of Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT Tapping is phrases.

So, as you explore ways to nurture your emotional well-being, think about the soothing touch of EFT Tapping and let's learn about what to say when tapping.

WHAT IS EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES (EFT)?

EFT Tapping is like a gentle, alternative therapy where you intentionally tap on specific points on your face and upper body while saying truthful statements.

It's a bit like traditional Chinese energy medicine, tapping into your ability to actively think about and tune in to your problems.

This method, often called "Tapping," is user-friendly and can be embraced by anyone, no matter where you are in life. EFT combines physical touch and thoughtful words, creating a unique way to address concerns and find emotional relief.

THE GENTLE ART OF EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES

As touched upon earlier, Tapping opens a doorway to alternative therapy blending two main aspects, the power of spoken words and the gentle touch.

This unique practice, known as EFT Tapping, offers a soothing approach that combines the comfort of conversation with the calming effect of touch. You'll delve into an exploration of how EFT Tapping forms a grounded and beneficial path for emotional well-being.

Talk:

The first aspect of EFT, like several other therapies or healing techniques, is talk. Talking holds a unique importance, just as it does in psychotherapy.

Here, your gentle dialogue becomes a comforting bridge, connecting your words to the path of emotional healing.

Talking about an emotion or a feeling can actually help shift perspectives and bring real change. Techniques like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) also involve this aspect of talk in its practice.

Touch:

One of the five love languages, touch is a crucial aspect. Touch can be an extremely important factor in healing as it communicates care, affection, and presence.

Research shows that babies who receive safe touch are less likely to face mental health problems later in life than babies who did not receive enough or any safe touch. The way it uses touch is through tapping on specific points on the body simply called EFT Tapping points.

HOW ARE EFT TAPPING AND TALKING CONNECTED?

A major reason why talking is elemental in tapping lies in the fact that mere talking helps you change how you think, feel, and act in reaction to a problem.

This shift in the understanding or assessment of a challenge may even help a person come up with an action plan they would need to deal with it.

The name of the therapy itself—EFT Tapping—does not explicitly imply that there is a talking component to it. Contrary to this initial perception, you have seen how crucial talking is during Tapping sessions.

Tapping involves verbalizing the apparent problem and tapping while putting different aspects related to it in words.

It is different from positive affirmations. Instead of uttering affirmations, tapping focuses on speaking the truth of a situation. Basically, it is about accepting that you are facing some challenges instead of negating those experiences.

IS THERE ANY STANDARD EFT PROTOCOL?

The Standard EFT Protocol, consisting of the "Setup" and "Sequence" of tapping points, forms the foundation of one complete round of EFT. It follows a streamlined approach derived from the original EFT Basic Recipe and adheres to the Gold Standard EFT protocol established by EFT developer Gary Craig (1).

To begin, as you tap on each point in the Sequence, you simultaneously voice a reminder phrase related to your specific issue.

  • Top of Head (TOH)
  • Eyebrow (EB)
  • Side of Eye (SE)
  • Under Eye (UE)
  • Under Nose (UN)
  • Chin Point (CH)
  • Collarbone Point (CB)
  • Under Arm (UA)
  • Thumb
  • Index Finger
  • Middle Finger
  • Little Finger
EFT Tapping Points

Each tap corresponds to a designated point on the body, facilitating the flow of energy and promoting emotional release. As you progress through the Sequence, you'll engage both physically and mentally, fostering a deeper connection with your emotions and experiences.

By following this structured protocol, you can effectively address a wide range of issues and work towards achieving emotional balance and well-being. Whether you're new to EFT or an experienced practitioner, the Standard EFT Protocol offers a reliable framework for guiding your tapping sessions towards healing and transformation.

"He has given us a remarkably simple gift to help us get through those moments when we aren't sure we can endure one more step. That gift is tapping."

ENHANCING YOUR EFT PRACTICE WITH ADVANCED STRATEGIES

At the advanced level of EFT, you only need to speak the setup phrase once. You can incorporate additional techniques like the Gamut Point or Finger Points to enhance the tapping process. Remember, tapping the top of the head can be reserved for positive affirmations.

You may also utilize other strategies such as the 9 Gamut Procedure (1), tapping under the breast, on the wrist, ankle points, thymus points, and the sore spot as necessary. These techniques add depth and effectiveness to your EFT practice, providing you with more tools to address various emotional and physical issues.

As you become more proficient in EFT, you'll discover the nuances of each technique and how they can be tailored to your specific needs. Trust in your intuition and allow yourself to experiment with different approaches to find what works best for you.

With consistent practice and an open mind, you'll gradually deepen your understanding of EFT and its transformative potential. Embrace each tapping session as an opportunity for growth and healing, knowing that you have the power to create positive change in your life through this powerful technique.

“SETUP PHRASE” FOR TAPPING POINTS - WHAT TO SAY WHEN TAPPING

The EFT Setup is the first part of the Standard EFT Protocol, done at the beginning of a tapping round to prepare us for the changes we seek and/or to help us refocus the tapping when a separate Aspect arises. It is not necessarily a component for every tapping round, but is highly recommended for achieving optimal results (2).

The Setup Phrase itself is a two-step process:

Accept Myself_EFT Tapping
  • The first step is to tap on the SOH (Side of Hand, originally called the KC or Karate Chop) Point while speaking aloud a phrase acknowledging/ tuning-in to the energy of the problem, uncomfortable feeling, thought, challenge, or body sensation (e.g. “Even though I have this ,”)
  • The second step is to continue tapping while stating an affirmation of self-acceptance, acknowledgment, or positive intention to “balance” the negative focus. This allows stepping back from the problem and evaluating it objectively (e.g. “…I deeply and completely accept myself)
  • For example: “Even though I have this pain in my neck, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

Either part of the Setup Phrase can be flexed in style, language or emphasis, based upon on the needs of the EFT client, e.g., Even though I have this pain in my neck, it feels better than it did 5 minutes ago.

The Reminder Phrase

The Reminder Phrase is the issue-at-hand from the first half of the Setup phrase–the words that describe the subjective experience of the client (feelings, thoughts, body sensations, etc.). It is used to maintain focus on the specific Aspect the client has chosen to address (3).

Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT Tapping is a touch and talk therapy that involves tapping on meridian points while verbalizing the truth of the situation. Talking, being an important part of EFT Tapping sessions, differs from affirmations.

In essence, EFT Tapping refrains from using overly positive phrases while tapping and stresses upon speaking and accepting the truth of the matter. There is a process that we need to follow if we want effective results.

CONCLUSION

As you wrap up your journey through EFT Tapping, take comfort in the warmth of spoken words during this therapeutic experience. Even though the name might not shout it out, the sweet exchange of thoughts in tapping sessions is like a cozy hug for your soul.

Through these gentle talks, EFT Tapping becomes more than just a method—it transforms into a heartfelt conversation with yourself, a gentle path to healing wrapped in the soft language of words.

As you venture into your EFT Tapping moments, let your words be a tender companion, guiding you to a place of deeper understanding and the peaceful embrace of emotional well-being.

I hope this article helped you gain insights into how phrasing works and what you say during tapping.

In summary, Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT Tapping is a clinically proven alternative healing therapy that gets you faster results, vitality, and happiness. It combines touch with talk. Touching consists of tapping on specific meridian points and talking consists of phrasing statements that declare the truth of the issue you are facing.
