EFT Tapping: Help Yourself  By Borrowing Benefits

In this article, you will learn why kindness and goodwill have a place in the world, how kindness helps us be a better version of ourselves, why helping others helps you, and the role EFT Tapping techniques play in developing interpersonal relationships and the advancement of society.

You might have heard of Borrowing Benefits which provides you the peace and harmony while reducing the emotional intensity when you tap along with the group.

From the very earliest use of EFT,  practitioners and those who just tapped along during workshops and demonstrations were reporting that their own particular problems were reduced or removed even though they had not been specifically tapping on them.

This phenomenon was most marked amongst practitioners who spent a lot of time tapping along with their clients on the latter's problems.

They were reporting that their lives were better and their problems were lifted even though they had not specifically tapped on them, and even though in some cases they were not consciously aware of the exact nature of the problem.

What is Borrowing Benefits?

Borrowing Benefits is a phenomenon that happens when we experience a reduction in emotional intensity (or a shift in awareness) after tapping along with a group, audio, video or live EFT session – especially when the client’s issue mirrors our own.

It's an EFT feature in which people of the audience pick a troublesome event from their own past and get relief by tapping with another person.

Borrowing Benefits is also a strategy. It involves setting an intention to work on our own specific issue before turning our complete focus towards assisting someone else to tap through an unrelated issue.

After tapping (and speaking) along with the other person, we often find a reduction in the emotional intensity (or a shift in our awareness) around our specific concern, even when it was not specifically addressed in the tapping.

Regardless, the audience uses the same phrases and taps on the same points as the person on stage or in the video.

While this phenomena is still in its early stages of research, it is thought that audience members draw their own analogies from the on-stage person's problem and therefore find relief as if they were tapping directly into their own problem.

As a strategy, Borrowing Benefits can be used formally with a group to help each attendee clearly identify an issue to address in preparation for ‘tapping along’ with a demonstration.

Advantages of Borrowing Benefits

Entire audiences can achieve quality relief during one EFT session. There appears to be no limit to the audience size. It can be hundreds or thousands or millions. Care must be taken with large groups of the small percentage that are so emotionally frail that they should not attempt any healing procedure without the presence of a skilled professional.

If the session on stage or DVD is in depth and of high quality most audience members will benefit to a greater degree than doing EFT on themselves or with an in-experienced EFT practitioner.

Many audience members experience relief in a relatively painless way because they are ostensibly tapping for someone else’s issue instead of dwelling directly on their own difficult circumstances.

Often an audience member’s entire issue is completely resolved. When there are pieces left over, a qualified EFT practitioner can finish it up with one-on-one sessions.

EFT practitioners can speed up complex cases by giving clients videos to take home to practice borrowing benefits between sessions.

Some audience members may tune into otherwise buried emotional issues while borrowing benefits. When this happens a great deal of time is saved because it hastens the process of finding a core issue.

How to conduct a Borrowing Benefits session?

Before you start, pre-frame the audience with some important features:

a) Explain the mechanics of the process as well as the items above under the heading ‘specific events are the most important thing to remember about Borrowing Benefits’.

b) Emphasise and re-emphasise the importance of using a specific event. Without this table-pounding-emphasis, people will tend to pick out a globally-stated issue.

Have each audience member pick out a specific event to work on and give it a title as though it was a short movie. This title should be written down and glanced at frequently as a reminder throughout the Borrowing Benefits session.

Before starting your on-stage session, quiz members of the audience as to the specific events they have chosen. You may be surprised at what people consider a specific event. By guiding some audience members in finding their specific events, other audience members are more likely to be more accurate in their selection.

Ask the audience members to write down their intensity, on a 0-10 scale regarding the specific event. This intensity must be what they feel now as they tune into it and not what it was when it was happening and the tap on it.

Helping others is an extremely important aspect of humanity, bringing people together and creating a beautiful world filled with love and unity.

So, in the spirit of inspiration, here are a few reasons why helping others actually helps yourself.

Helping others feels good Good deeds have been related to improved emotions of happiness in studies. Helping others can strengthen our support systems and motivate us to become more active.

As a result, our self-esteem may improve. There is some evidence that helping others can cause changes in the brain that are associated with happiness.

It develops a feeling of togetherness. Helping others can lead to new friendships and a stronger sense of community.

When you make a positive difference in someone's life, you feel linked to them; it's a connecting experience. Co-operation fosters trust, which not only pulls them closer to you, but also brings you closer to them.

When you choose to help others, especially if it's face to face, you're making a good impact on their life while also establishing social bonds.

Karma is a two-way road. The concept of karma is frequently presented in a negative light. If you do anything terrible, bad will find you.

It also works the other way around. Good things appear to happen when you are a good person and help others.

Building resilience helps you adapt better to stress and hardship. It may sound unusual, but helping others does not increase stress to your life; rather, it helps us manage stress more effectively.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (tapping) is clinically proven to lower stress, tension, anxiety, past-trauma to enable health, happiness and vitality.

It's all a matter of perception. You can incorporate other people's points of view into your own by looking at their problems. It helps you accept the stress and difficulties that we all endure.

In a world fascinated with celebrities enjoying opulent, seemingly carefree lives, we might lose sight of that perspective.

Helping others, on the other hand, brings us back to reality by reminding us that most people suffer – and that it's fine if we do as well.

It can support you in discovering purpose in your life. There is a link between helping others and discovering meaning in your own life.

And it's not just those who have previously found meaning in giving back that are doing so. Helping others, on the other hand, can really create a sense of purpose in our life.

Helping others satisfies some of our most basic needs, such as social interaction and observing how your actions affect others. Those are the aspects that contribute to the definition of a meaningful existence.

It's highly contagious. People are more likely to undertake good deeds after witnessing someone else do so. This effect has the potential to spread throughout the community, inspiring dozens more people to take action.

It will make you feel rejuvenated. Taking care of others can teach you how to take care of yourself. The "activism cure" is a terrific method to come back to feeling like yourself if you've had a bad experience or just have a case of the blues (2).

The current millennium has seen a lot of changes—culturally, emotionally and even spiritually—the majority of which have been positive. We've witnessed a world where compassion flourishes and individuals serve others towards benefit and prosperity of the society as a whole.

This is a generation of questioning and exploring—questioning our belief systems and exploring new ways to improve ourselves and the lives of others around us.

Amidst all the chaos this generation deals with, people think about the happy feelings they had the last time they did something nice for someone else.

Perhaps it was the pleasure of running errands for a neighbour, or the fulfillment of volunteering at a local group, or the pleasure of donating to a worthy cause, or maybe it was you helping out a wounded puppy.

Perhaps it was the simple satisfaction of supporting a friend. Kindness has its own place, and it creates a sense of beauty and compassion.

Help Yourself By Helping Others: EFT Tapping techniques

Remember that time when it was chilly outside and you forgot your coat at home and someone else lent you theirs? When you were tired at the end of the day after work and someone gave you a seat on the bus?

When you were in need of a ride home and one was offered to you? When you couldn't handle a Friday morning and a pleasant compliment from a stranger about your outfit made your day?

Out of all the most important and wholesome things we remember in life, the ones that stick with us the longest is when someone makes an effort, no matter how modest, without you having to ask for it.

The simplest method to convey happiness from one person to another is to be kind to them. Even the tiniest act of kindness has the potential to make someone's day.

When you treat others with kindness, you are reminding them that they are valuable and they matter. You can inspire someone to be good to someone else by performing a modest act of kindness for a stranger.

It has a ripple effect. Before you know it, everyone is on board and compassion is spreading like a wave throughout your neighbourhood and slowly the whole society (1).

Help Yourself By Helping Others: EFT Tapping techniques

Nowadays, even at the workplace, managers focus on the growth of their team members to ensure that they themselves grow.

With the pressure to outperform, what has also increased is our stress levels at work and in our personal relationships too.

Stress has proven to be the cause for 85% of all illness. Needless to say it is also the cause for poor emotional health.

The good news is there are newer and more effective methods discovered everyday to build rapport, enhance relationships and even take out the stress from life, thereby promoting overall health of individuals and companies too.

One such effective healing method is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT Tapping). EFT is clinically proven to lower stress, anxiety, tension, depression, physical tension, fears, limitations and blocks. It is so easy that you can not only use it on yourselves, but help others around you too.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT Tapping) is a mind-body technique which helps to increase the vitality and happiness by discovering the root cause or the emotions that is suppressing it and working on it.

One method of finding out what your pattern is, is by using Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). EFT Tapping gets to the base of the root cause of whatever is disturbing you, or whatever is holding you back, and makes you feel better by working on it or removing it.

For those new to EFT, it is also known as Tapping Therapy, which combines tapping on acupressure points while saying statements out loud to accept situations.

If you would like to help others or make a difference to the lives around you, and experience the power of EFT Tapping first hand, just download the EFT Tapping Booklet below.

The Personal Peace Procedure (PPP) is not just a way to feel a little more peaceful. Properly understood, this technique should be the healing centerpiece for every person on earth.

Every physician, therapist, spiritual counsellor and personal performance coach in the world should be using it as a leading tool for helping others (and themselves)

The Personal Peace Procedure is a useful method for addressing one’s own issues and helping out others with EFT. It involves making a list of all the specific scenes or events you can remember and methodically working through the list.

There is no recommended way to order the memories. They can be chronological, grouped in themes, or random, as long as safety is maintained by starting with memories that don’t evoke high emotion (as when learning EFT).

Memories can be addressed in any order you choose. For example, by starting down the list or working on the most intense or the least intense ones first, etc.

The idea is to address each issue in the gentlest way possible, just as you would with a client. It is not unusual when working solo to find that you prefer the assistance of another EFT practitioner.

It can be very helpful to utilise the energy and objectivity of another to help us resolve some challenging issues – particularly regarding early and repetitive childhood trauma.

“No one has ever become poor by giving.”

- Anne Frank

Diary of Anne Frank

The Personal Peace Procedure is a systematic way to do EFT for our own self-care.

It is a prerequisite before we start to work professionally with others, and a way to deal with issues that arise in our lives and work thereafter. You can also help others by teaching them how to use the personal peace approach and spreading kindness in the process.

The procedure involves working through all the recalled negative memories – one at a time – until neutralised (until the intensity is zero or as low as it will go).

Typically working on one memory will bring another into awareness. When it does, add it to the list (but complete work on one specific memory at a time).

A “negative” memory in this context is a memory we remember as having been negative, whether the emotion attached currently feels intense or not.

Often when we begin to tap on memories, which seem to have a SUDs level of zero, tapping lifts the repression of the emotion and we experience it, and then work through it.

It is my hope that the Personal Peace Procedure will become standard practice over the world. A few minutes per day will make a significant difference on our academic performance, interpersonal relationships, health, and overall quality of life.

However, these words are meaningless until others (or you) put the concept into action.

CEO and Corporate trainer Neeraj Kumar on completing EFT, applied the process with executives in the corporate arena, where communication is the key to success and the fear of public speaking can be a hindrance to growth.

Here is what he had to share, I have done several interventions in the area of public speaking for many corporates, and I find that the results are extremely rapid, he says. “Although they claim that after tapping, the butterflies in their stomach is only slightly reduced, it is when they are actually called on stage that they realise there is no fear at all and no butterflies whatsoever.”

Helping others brings with it a sense of peace and satisfaction that no other substance can give.

Another such hero is EFT and Matrix Re-imprinting Practitioner Isobel Gordon, who helped her client Tracey get over anxiety and panic attacks.

Here’s what she has to say, “Tracey was suffering from depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. When she first started therapy with EFT and Matrix Re imprinting, she was on sick leave because she couldn’t cope with life. Beyond this, she had spent 8 years avoiding travelling on trains, tube trains and planes. At the same time, life got chaotic and, after 9/11 and 7/7 (bombings in London), she believed that trains and tubes were not safe either. Her world was imploding. EFT helped get her back on the over-ground and tube trains, which took just 2 sessions.”

Help Yourself By Helping Others: EFT Tapping techniques

We don't find a meaningful existence; we build it via our activities, and it all starts with seeking out opportunities to assist others. The more we give, the more we stand to earn purpose, meaning, and happiness—all of the things we seek yet find so difficult to obtain in life.

Finally, remember to be kind and compassionate to yourself and others. You can also utilise EFT Tapping to help others by spreading kindness for the betterment of society.

I hope that my beliefs stick with people who read them, and that you, too, will recognise the delight in helping others and do the same.

Keep tapping!
