EFT Tapping to Overcome Irritation

Does EFT Tapping Work For Irritation?

In this article, you will learn about the symptoms of irritations, its negative effects and how one could have a control over irritability with the help of EFT Tapping technique which has been scientifically proven to be helpful.

In relationships and workplaces, everyone is exposed to harmful particles and irritating personalities naturally.

Any average person getting irritated, and thereby frustrated is not so uncommon anymore because of the conflicts and mismatched expectations everywhere.

I was a victim to this daunting cycle and anyone who reads this would be able to empathize with these situations very well too.

In psychology, irritability happens to be a personality trait that is caused by anger, frustration and reactions to disagreements or provocations.

When experiencing the feeling of irritation, you are more likely to get frustrated or upset easily as well.

You could either experience it due to a certain situation or person, or, it could be the result of a physical or mental health condition (1).

Although irritability is common, there is a chance of it intensifying, which could lead to agitation, a stronger feeling. There are some mental health disorders that have been linked with irritability, like

symptoms of irritation

Irritation usually takes place for a short period of time, but there are some other symptoms that accompany this feeling, like

Racing Pulse

Racing pulse - Tachycardia, also called tachyarrhythmia, is a heart rate that exceeds the normal resting rate. In general, a resting heart rate over 100 beats per minute is accepted as tachycardia in adults. Heart rates above the resting rate may be normal (such as with exercise) or abnormal (such as with electrical problems within the heart) (2).

Confusion

Confusion is a state anyone wouldn't want to go. But, with the extent of unsettlement produced in the mind due to the irritation caused, the mind reaches a state of non-functioning for a while and it should not be a surprise if one feels hard to do even the simplest of things when irritated. It can sometimes even lead to dysfunction.

Rapid Breathing

Irritation may sometimes lead to a choking sensation after the intense pressure it has given to brain and to vocals if they are used. Tachypnea is the term that your health care provider uses to describe your breathing if it is too fast, especially if you have fast, shallow breathing from a lung disease or other medical cause (5).

Sweating

Excessive irritation can definitely lead to unhealthy sweating and this sweating drains out lot of energy of the body which could probably have been used for better things.

Inability to think

Irritation leading to dysfunction should not be a surprise because of the amount of strain it lays on the brain. It doesn't allow the perspectives to be processed well through the brain so that it could function in a normal expected way but rather makes it stagnant to think the otherwise.

Migraines or hot flashes

They are most commonly caused by changing hormone levels before, during and after menopause. It's not clear exactly how hormonal changes cause hot flashes. But most research suggests that hot flashes occur when decreased estrogen levels cause your body's thermostat (hypothalamus) to become more sensitive to slight changes in body temperature (3).

Hair Loss

The alopecia or popularly known hair loss is also a result that follows the state of irritation. The stressful impact will reach your scalp sooner thus reducing the resistance of hair and thereby causes them fall.

Reduced Sex Drive

The intent to have sex with a partner can be inevitably reduced post irritation as it also affects the release of hormones and also can create a mental state which isn't calm enough for one to have.

 tips to manage irritability

Often, people just tend to avoid interacting with others when they are irritated and make use of coping mechanisms that may or may not eventually turn out to be harmful for them, like substance use or self-harm.

It is usually up to the person to figure out which coping mechanism is most suited to their lifestyle and personality. However, following are some of the common ways to manage irritability.

1.

Meditation

Sit down comfortably. Take a breathe in through your nose and let it pass through mouth. Bring into awareness the emotions of irritability and acknowledge it. In past, researches have suggested that those in the state of irritability feel a lot better when they acknowledge their emotions.

Now, once acknowledged, bring your focus to only breathing. Keep doing it until you feel calmer.

Do this every time you want to grow your brain calmer.

2.

Working out/ Exercising

Workouts will not only get your heart pumping but will also drift you apart from the state of irritability. Make sure not to overstrain. It’s better to not be hard on yourself.

3.

Getting proper sleep

Lack of sleep can result in irritability big time. Recharge your batteries again and only get your hands on work again when feeling refreshed.

4.

Venting out to people you trust

Before venting out your feelings, make sure the other person is a therapist. Otherwise, you may end up transferring your emotions to another person.

5.

Journaling your feelings

Maintain a journal and dump all your feelings there. Write how this state currently make you feel, why is it happening, when did it happen in the past and slowly get rid of irritation.

6.

Engage yourself in a hobby

Engaging in a hobby will again drive your irritation away. When you do what you like or are passionate about, your brain feels a lot calmer and clears off the pathways blocked by your past state of irritability.

7.

Use EFT Tapping

EFT Tapping is an alternative therapy method that involves gentle tapping while speaking out statements of truth.

These statements, in the case of irritability will revolve around irritation. It will be really helpful for you to figure out what actually caused you to feel irritated; this might help you to deal with the root cause of this negative, uneasy feeling.

EFT will uncover all your comfortable thoughts and will bring long-lasting relief.

Another way to deal with irritation could be to walk away or ignoring situations that might be provocative, instead of wanting to respond to them. Responding will only make things worse and will not allow you to think straight.

Getting some time alone for yourself might also be helpful, since it will allow you to calm down and gain perspective.

Negative Consequences of Irritation

Irritability does not happen to be a mental health issue. Most of the times, people might get frustrated more easily than others or just undergo overwhelming or exhausting events which could lead to irritation. There happens to be no direct source behind this feeling, but everything has a cause.

Chronic irritation happens to be a symptom of many mental health issues. Common causes of chronic irritation include:

  • Poor stress-management skills.
  • Physical health problems like PCOS, menopause, infections, toothaches, migraines and even injuries.
  • Side effects of any medication you’re on.
  • Substance use or abuse.
  • Substance withdrawals.
  • Irregular circadian rhythm.
  • Inadequate self-care.

Irritation is felt from time-to-time. But if you feel like it is increasing and is interfering in your everyday life, you might want to consult a professional to help you out with identifying the root cause of this feeling.

Therefore, Emotional Freedom Technique is a suggested alternative technique to help you overcome feelings of irritation. This technique requires you to tap on the body’s energy points to help you get rid of such feelings.

HOW DOES EFT Tapping TECHNIQUE HELP IN OVERCOMING IRRITATION?

Feeling irritated occasionally is quite normal. Every day, we go through many instances that may make us feel irritated for a short period of time.

For example, an argument with a family member or colleague, getting stuck in traffic for long, or hearing loud noises.

But when this irritation becomes chronic, if you constantly feel irritated most of the time and it becomes a part of your nature, it is something that is seeking your attention.

Chronic irritation is usually a result of suppressed emotions. When you cannot express your emotions, it makes you feel frustrated and as a result you tend to feel irritated with every little thing.

According to the founder of EFT, Gary Craig, when you go through some negative or traumatic experiences in your life, (however small or big they are) they are stored as a distressing memory.

These distressing memories create a disruption in the flow of energy in the body, and as a result unresolved negative emotions are formed.

When these unresolved emotions interfere with the flow of energy in the body, it causes this annoying discomfort.

Those pent up emotions make their way out by making us feel anxious, irritated, and sad, without us being able to understand the reason behind these feelings.

EFT is an alternative healing method based on Chinese acupuncture and modern psychology. By saying certain statements along with tapping on specific points on the body, the unresolved emotions in the body get balanced, thereby enabling deep healing.

By doing this, the emotional charge associated with a past event, no longer remains, and hence, you no longer feel those negative emotions even when you recall that experience.

Emotional Freedom Techniques, EFT, is now used worldwide by millions and is clinically shown to reduce depression, anxiety, PTSD, phobias, pain, cravings, negative emotions (for example anger, sadness, grief, fear, hurt, guilt) as well as traumatic memories, creating a feeling of well-being and calm.

HOW TO USE EFT TAPPING TO OVERCOME IRRITATION

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT): EFT Tapping for overcoming Irritation

Step 1:

First Use EFT Tapping On What It Feels Like To Feel Irritated

Explore the physical sensations in the body associated with the irritation and use the physical tension tapping process to reduce the sensations.

1.

To get started, begin by investigating the physical nature of Irritation.

Connect with the feeling of irritation and notice where you feel it in the body.

Briefly, you can begin by asking yourself the following questions to explore further:

  • Where in the body do you experience the feeling of irritation?
  • What is the colour, texture, size, shape of the feeling in the body?
  • What are the sensations like? For example rough or smooth

2.

Then measure the level of Irritation by asking:

"What number is the irritation at, where 10 is really high and 1 is not high at all." Just go with whatever comes up spontaneously, without thinking too much about it.

3.

Begin by Tapping on the Karate Chop or Side of the Hand EFT Tapping Points:

"Even though I feel irritated and I feel it in my [part of the body where you experience the feeling, eg. chest] and it's at a number 6 and it's red in colour and it feels rough, I deeply and completely love and accept myself." (Repeat 3 times).

4.

Then Tap on the facial and upper body EFT Tapping Points using these phrases:

  • Eyebrow: This irritation...
  • side Of the Eye: So irritating...
  • Under the eye: Irritation in my chest..
  • Under the nose: It's a red colour...
  • Chin: At a number 6...
  • Collarbone: So rough...
  • Under the arm: This irritation...
  • Thumb: I feel it in my chest...
  • Index Finger: So much irritation...
  • Middle Finger: Really irritating...
  • Little Finger: The colour red...

5.

Close the sequence by coming back to the EFT Karate Chop Tapping Points and repeat once:

"Even though I feel irritated and I feel it in my chest and it's at a number 6 and it's red in colour and it feels rough, I deeply and completely love and accept myself."

6.

Relax:

Take a gentle breath in and out and take a sip of water.

7.

Test:

At the end of the EFT Tapping , you can ask yourself the following questions:

  • What number is the irritation at now?
  • What happened?
  • How does it make you feel?

You can repeat this process by going back to Step 1 if you feel like the number could come down a little more.

Step 2:

Then Discover Past Experiences Of Feeling Irritated And Clear Them

Explore memories related to the irritation and use the Tell the Story & the Movie Technique to clear it.

To uncover the memories linked to the irritation, you can ask questions like:

  • When have you felt these feelings of irritation before?
  • What do these feelings remind you of?
  • When did the irritation start? What happened?
  • Was there ever a time when you did not experience these feelings?
  • What can trigger and bring on the irritation?

Identify past events linked to the feeling of irritation and resolve it with the help of tapping therapy.

You can ask the following questions:

  • When have you felt irritated before?
  • What happens to trigger the irritation?
  • Who or what triggers the feeling of irritation?

These questions will identify your past experiences associated with the irritation.

Step 3:

Explore Any Limiting Beliefs That Prevented You From Being free of Irritation

Limiting beliefs are thoughts that can be conscious or unconscious and can end up becoming responsible for self-sabotage, procrastination and low self-esteem, in an individual.

For irritation, first uncover the limiting beliefs which can either be at the surface level or associated with the deeper root memories. Then shift them from stressful to empowering. For example,

  •  “Something bad is going to happen” to “Everything is going to be OK"
  • "It not safe" to "I am safe now"

Step 4:

Close With Positive EFT Tapping For healing irritation:

Examples of a positive tapping sequence might be:

  • “Even though I felt irritated, now, I am open to feeling peaceful.”
  • “Even though I was feeling irritated for so long, now, I open myself to the possibility of being happy and free."
Overcoming Irritation

Once all of this is done with, you’ll feel a lot freer and calm.

There may be times where you fall into denial about needing help. But, the longer it takes for you to recognize or accept that there’s something wrong, the longer it will take for you to heal, since the feeling will just intensify and hurt those around you.

Once you finally come to terms with it, consider approaching a professional since they will help you overcome irritation.

Individuals may experience irritability as a response to stressful or overwhelming surroundings and situations. But, continuous irritation may be due to a physical or a psychological disorder that requires professional attention.

does EFT TAPPING TECHNIQUE really work?

There have been some clinical evidences of the use of EFT Tapping to control irritation.

for instance:

  • EFT Tapping test on Borrowing Benefits - A group delivery method known as “Borrowing Benefits” described in The EFT Manual was used, in which EFT is administered to one individual while the remainder of the group simultaneously self-applies EFT. The settings included residential institutes, non-residential institutes, hotel meeting rooms, and a university campus. The identical curriculum was used at all 6 workshops. Most were conducted over 4 days. Two were conducted at residential institutes in which the curriculum was delivered over the course of 5 days, with 2 half-days off, but the same number of instruction and practice hours. There was a remarkable increase of happiness level from 1 to 595 post-intervention which is really significant - refer to observations of happiness in table no.6 (4)

These are few other successful clinical tests that were conducted, where EFT Tapping for Irritability control was found to be remarkable in helping individuals get over their issues.

Additionally, even though Emotional Freedom Techniques can be administered on the self, it is recommended to consult a professional EFT Practitioner to get help for physical and/or emotional issues you may be facing.

One of our participants, Sadhna Batouri Singh, who is herself a Reiki Master and Yoga Master, was very happy with the results EFT gave her in healing herself. Here's what she has to say: "I used EFT to release anger and annoyance related to some painful experiences. I was really surprised when I saw those old pictures again after a few months, and felt no pain, or anger. I am now free from unwanted feelings and emotions."

A Clinical Psychologist from Singapore, Mahima Gupta Didwania, shared with us how effective she found EFT to be. She shared, "EFT combines cognitive, emotional, and somatic work to cut through layers of trauma effectively and address the underlying patterns keeping problems in place. For me as a counsellor, its fluidity, flexibility, ease, and tangible real-time relief is very helpful because it appeals to people across spectrums."
