The panic caused by the Covid-19 gripped the world by its claws. Apart from the death of thousands, the ones who made it through were disturbed by the pandemic, isolation and uncertainty. Without effective coping methods like EFT Tapping, it could lead to a serious impact on the mental health of not only those who were directly associated with the disease but also those who weren't.

During the summer months of 2021, the only thing 30-year-old Priya could hear was the continuous wail of ambulance sirens outside her window. 

Before she knew it, she started keeping a count of how many she heard in a day. It wasn’t long before the high-pitched sound made her feel breathless. Her chest felt heavy, there was a sharp pain, and her pulse raced. She was convinced she had a heart attack or that she had Covid. Would her mother get it from her too? How would she look after her alone?

 Priya went to the emergency room, where the doctors told her she had a panic attack. It was the first of many more similar episodes for Priya, and she struggled to cope with her feelings.

Fears about COVID-19 can take an emotional toll.

It certainly is a frightening and uncertain time as case tolls, vaccination rates and government responses vary. As we brace ourselves for what may come next, we’re all watching the headlines and wondering, “When is this going to end?”

In 2020, a KFF Health Tracking Poll found that 36% of adults had trouble sleeping or eating, 32% said they increased their alcohol consumption, and 12% saw themselves struggling with high stress and anxiety levels.

They also recorded a 41.1% rise in the number of reports of Anxiety Disorder / Depressive Disorder from January -June 2019 to January 2021.

With economic uncertainty, job scarcity, loss of loved ones and social isolation, it’s no wonder that 4 in every ten people deal with overwhelming emotional pressure and depression due to the pandemic.

Many have found solace and healing with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) when looking beyond traditional methods.

What are Emotional Freedom Techniques?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) are often used as an alternative treatment for both physical pains and emotional distress. It may also be called “tapping” or “psychological acupressure.” It is an easy-to-learn and easy–to–use method,

Research has shown that tapping the body can balance your energy system, which relieves pain. This indicates that an energy disruption may cause negative emotions and pain associated with thoughts or past experiences.

EFT Tapping has been used to treat people with anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

EFT focuses on the meridian points or hot spots through which the body’s energy flows are balanced. Any disruptions may lead to sickness and stress.

Common meridian points used in EFT are: 

  • Karate chop point on the hand
  • Eyebrow
  • Temple
  • Under the nose
  • Chin
  • Collarbone
  • Under the arm

EFT Tapping Points

These energy points are tapped gently using pressure from the tips of the fingers on one hand while repeating relevant phrases simultaneously. The process helps you access your body’s energy channels and sends calming signals to the part of your brain that controls stress and helps restore balance to disturbed energy flows.

EFT has been clinically proven and widely used globally. It reduces depression, anxiety, traumatic stress, phobias, pain, cravings, negativity (anger, sadness, grief, fear, hurt, and guilt), and past stressful memories, bringing people health, happiness, and vitality.

Over the last two years, we have helped provide comfort and peace to many people who have struggled with the physical and mental effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. We have noticed that many of the people we spoke to deal with Covid and its consequences, in various stages, whether they have been infected with the virus or not.

From video or phone consultations with our EFT practitioners or individuals who practise the techniques on their own, we have many testimonials from clients who continue to benefit from the method after our consultations.

Here’s a closer look at the EFT Tapping and Energy Yoga techniques that have worked for our clients and continue to support them in the pandemic lifestyle.

For many people, uncertainty is the hardest thing to deal with. It’s easy to lose control and allow overwhelming dread and panic to take over. Here’s when EFT can make a big difference.

If you haven’t been infected by the Covid 19 virus and feel stressed and anxious about contracting the disease, here are a few EFT techniques that can help you relax.

A theme you can tap on is:

“Even though I feel so stressed and I'm just so scared that I may get this disease."

"Even though I am so scared that my family and friends could also get it and may fall sick or die, I completely love and accept myself anyway.”

“Even though I don't like wearing the mask because I feel like I can't breathe, I completely love and accept myself anyway.”

“Even though I never thought they'd be a future where I'd have to wear a mask and walk around in public, I completely love and accept myself anyway.”

Finger release method

Another popular EFT technique is the “Finger Release Method”, where you hold the thumb, index finger, middle finger, ring finger and little finger one at a time while breathing in and out deeply. You can repeat phrases like “I release this stress now. I am letting it melt away”  or “I’m releasing this anxiety now; I’m allowing this anxiety to go. I'm so grateful I get to feel calm” as you hold and let go of each finger.

The Nine Gamut Procedure

Another effective energy spot where EFT Tapping is practical is the Gamut Point, located on the back of the hand about an inch down from the knuckles between the little finger and the ring finger. You can find the point with one or two fingers of the opposite hand, moving from the knuckles toward the wrist until you feel a slight depression.

Once you find the point, focus on the source of your worry or stress, and continue to tap, hold, or massage the point while doing the following nine steps:

  • Close your eyes for a few seconds
  • Open your eyes
  • Keeping your head still, look hard down to the right
  • Continuing to keep your head still, look hard down to the left
  • Slowly roll your eyes in a full circle in a clockwise direction, imagining that you can see each number on the face of a clock
  • Then slowly roll your eyes back in a full circle in a counterclockwise direction
  • Hum about 5 seconds of any song that comes to mind
  • Count to 5 out loud
  • Lastly, hum about 5 seconds of any song again

You can end the session with a slow, calming breath. Here’s a short video showing you how it’s done.  

Energy Yoga

Another great technique is an exercise derived from Energy Yoga, where you can put your fingers on your forehead and then move it down the crown to release worry. You can watch a video showing the technique over here.

Hair combing

Hair combing is an effective way to release stress. You can put your hands through the base of the scalp and then comb it through to the ends while breathing in and out.

Tips for Alleviating Anxiety with EFT Tapping


For anxiety, rubbing your hand on your upper chest (connected to the immune system via the thymus) in a circular motion three times while repeating your phrases brings a sense of protection, eases your mind and boosts the immune system.


When you feel anxious, tapping on your eyebrow while going through the regular energy points may amplify this feeling.

Instead of tapping, you could try gently holding the eyebrow point instead.  


For some people, using the word anxiety may be triggering and may make them feel even more anxious. In these cases, we recommend using picture tapping. Here, you can draw out your feelings or picture the source of your anxiety. You can then use the EFT tapping process to release that emotion.


It is more than likely that this is not your first experience with these feelings of stress and anxiety. The fear and uncertainty surrounding the pandemic may have amplified these emotions and brought them to the surface. Still, deep-rooted issues undoubtedly need to be explored to get long-lasting relief.

In these cases, we recommend that after the immediate concerns and worries are dealt with, you should use EFT to find out the reasons behind the anxiety, stress, and fear. Often, there are more profound beliefs or memories, where a person may have already lost their family member, or maybe they have been through struggle and hardship and are scared that they may have to go through it again.

Studies have shown that people who suffer from anxiety have noticed a reduction in their symptoms after using EFT techniques.

How To Self-Heal & Become An EFT Practitioner

The pandemic brought with it many lessons on how professionals may thrive – or suffer, depending on their working environments. While working from home became a necessity for social distancing regulations, and some companies enjoyed its benefits, it did mean that the lines between your work life and your home life have almost disappeared. Employees are expected to work extra hours, often in confined spaces, with extended families.

It’s not surprising that this leads to mounting pressure, both mentally and emotionally, which has led to an increase in burnout. More than two thirds, or 69%, of employees, are experiencing burnout while working from home, which is impacting business productivity and overall health.

The WHO also recognised burnout as an occupational phenomenon due to the rising numbers. They identified these common signs of work from home burnout.

  • Lack of energy or exhaustion.
  • Increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's career.
  • It reduced professional efficacy.
EFT Tapping for Pandemic Work From Home

If you haven’t been infected but are overwhelmed and burnt out dealing with work from home situations or quarantines, here are a few EFT techniques that can help you overcome these feelings.

As we explained earlier, tap on the meridians, or press and let go of each finger. The themes you can tap on are:

“Even though I just feel so locked in, I just can't breathe, I'm all alone in this space, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though I feel like I'm going insane, I'm just locked in the same room in the same house all day. I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though my company expects me to work beyond my usual hours, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though I'm just so exhausted, overwhelmed and burnt out, and I wish I could just get away from it all, but I have nowhere else to go because this is the safest place for me; I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

3. ways to boost the immune system WITH EFT TAPPING

Data worldwide showed that improving your body’s defence against the coronavirus would help you recover from the infection easier and faster. While it is essential to eat the right foods and look after our physical health, EFT techniques can also boost your immune system in a few simple steps.

First, make a gentle fist with your hands, then tap on the upper chest above the thymus while making an “ahhhhh” sound. This allows the white blood cells to be stimulated and released into the bloodstream, which in turn help to fight against the symptoms of covid 19.

4. Children: anxiety caused by the pandemic

The impact of Covid 19 has affected both the physical and mental health of our most vulnerable populations- the children. With stay-at-home mandates, social isolation became the new normal. More than 330 million young people have been stuck at home since March 2021. 

Covid 19 has amplified negative emotions like sadness, anger, worry, and grief, making it difficult for both the child and their parents to handle.

Common questions that children worry about are,” When will schools reopen? When can we go out and play? When can we visit our favourite places?

Here are some ways to help children deal with their overwhelming emotions and anxiety.

5. Covid positive: suffering, recovering, post-recovery

Quarantined at home

After being infected with Covid 19, patients who were quarantined at home faced their own set of unique challenges and worries.

Many had difficulty breathing or lost their sense of taste and smell.

Even when staying with their families, the isolation at home was overwhelming.

Our therapists found that they could help their clients by staying in touch through chats, video calls or phone calls, and tapping with them, to provide them with emotional support.

EFT Tapping for stress caused by social isolation

Tapping on the meridians or pressing and letting go of each finger, as we explained earlier, is a great place to start. The themes in these situations can be:

“Even though I feel terrible, I'm stuck in this room, and I don't know what's going to happen. I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though I'm so scared and alone, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though I'm so exhausted that I can't seem to do much, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though I've still got the fever, and I don't know if I am going to get through this or not, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though I’m so scared that my family may also get infected, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though I'm terrified about the vulnerable adults or children in the house, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Lung Opening Exercises 

Covid 19 infections cause pneumonia which may make it difficult to breathe. Lung opening exercises are an effective way to increase the inhalation of air.

You can put your hand on the upper chest and rotate it in a circular motion, moving in clockwise and anticlockwise directions.

You can also put your fingers on the top of your shoulders and pull down the arms to open up the lung Meridian.

Like the ones shown in this video, deep breathing exercises are also recommended, along with tapping, to boost the patient’s immunity and vulnerable family members or children.

In the hospital or in recovery

EFT Tapping during Covid-19 recovery

The most frightening part of a Covid diagnosis is the time spent in the hospital. The fear of worsening disease, difficulty in breathing, the feeling of being away from their loved ones could be too much to bear.

Many witnessed deaths first-hand and were left dealing with depression.

After recovering from an acute illness, others were drained physically and mentally. Due to lethargy and inactivity, some reported unusual weight gain.

If you tested positive and have been admitted to the hospital or have recovered from Covid, but you’re still feeling unwell and depressed, here are a few EFT techniques that can help you overcome these feelings.

As explained earlier, tap on the meridians or press and let go of each finger. The themes you can tap on are :

  • “Even though I feel deficient, and I don’t understand how I caught the infection, because I was so careful, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though I just can't smell or taste anything, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

EFT has shown some promising results when used to tackle depression. A study in 2016 showed that EFT techniques reduced 41% of depressive symptoms in the patients who were evaluated.

However, in practice, we have seen that depression can take some time to work through the system, so it's essential to be kind to yourself if you’re doing the techniques by yourself or be patient and take it step-by-step with your patients if you are a practitioner.

6. grief caused by the loss of a loved one

Grief or loss of a loved one – adults and children who found themselves alone in this world. The grief can be crushing, and the fear of facing the journey ahead can be overwhelming

As practitioners, we worked with so many people who had lost loved ones, and we found a few techniques that helped them overcome their grief, one step at a time. If you are going through a similar situation, try these EFT techniques to find your way through.

  • During the first stage, tantrum tapping or release tapping provides a medium through which you can let your negative emotions out
  • During the second stage, you move towards acceptance of the loss. Tapping on the meridians can be accompanied by themes like:

“Even though I lost them, and I miss them, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though I'm not sure I'll ever recover from the loss, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Hope for the future

Just when we thought things were settling down, it seems like new variants are causing rising waves of infections in countries worldwide. Data from the WHO suggests that this variant may be more transmissible, but they are still researching how effective treatments and vaccines will be. This can bring anxiety and stress to the forefront again because of our fear of the unknown.
