How EFT Tapping Helps In Increasing Self-Confidence

EFT Tapping techniques to Increase Self-Confidence

EFT tapping for self-confidence

Looking back and feeling regretful at the life you've lived is one of the worst feelings. There are so many people who regret not having taken a particular decision, or not having done something they wanted to, only because they didn’t believe in themselves enough. It is important to learn how to build self-confidence. EFT Tapping technique is one effective method that can help you increase self-confidence.

It was one of the most beautiful days of my life. I couldn’t believe that I was able to speak so fluently in front of a huge audience. Well, for someone whose legs would literally shake before going on a stage, it was a huge personal victory!

Earlier, I was someone who would unconsciously stammer while talking to strangers, who could never ask a guy out on a date and could hardly post stuff on social media, even though I wanted to.

I knew something was wrong; that I was standing in my own way. I soon realised that I really needed to work on my self-confidence.

Have you been in a situation similar to mine? Do you tend to constantly undermine yourself and doubt your abilities?

If you could relate to me, then read on to find out how I used a unique and promising tool called EFT Tapping for increasing my self-confidence, and how you can do it too!

WHAT IS SELF-CONFIDENCE?

Self-confidence is a trust in your abilities, attitudes, and strengths. It is about being aware of your limitations, yet believing in yourself.

Confidence is a vital ingredient for success and happiness. If we lack confidence, our growth would be significantly hindered and we'll stay stuck in unhappy lives.

To understand what self-confidence actually looks like, let’s look at the qualities of a person with high self-confidence compared to a person with low self-confidence.

Signs of people with Low Self-Confidence:

  • Very sensitive to feedback and criticism
  • Often preoccupied with personal flaws/problems
  • Find it difficult to speak up for themselves and what they believe in
  • Struggle with contributing their opinion in conversations
  • Compare themselves with others and put themselves down as a result
  • Struggle with making decisions on their own
  • Have a hard time accepting genuine compliments from others
  • Too bothered by what others think of them

Signs of people with High Self-Confidence:

  • Able to accept their mistakes and learn from them
  • Not envious of other’s successes
  • Able to laugh at themselves
  • Open to trying and learning new things
  • Well aware of their strengths
  • Express what they truly feel
  • Able to set healthy boundaries

WHAT PREVENTS US FROM BEING SELF-CONFIDENT?

Low self-confidence can hold people back from:

  • Living the life they want
  • Overcoming an illness
  • Dealing with relationship issues
  • Going out on a date
  • Asking for a raise
  • Being fulfilled at work
  • Increasing business income

Having read the signs above, where do you think you are on the scale of self-confidence?

If you found yourself more inclined towards low self-confidence, then let’s find out a few reasons that prevent you from feeling confident.

Self-Doubt and EFT Tapping

Self-doubt

Self-doubt is basically the complete opposite of self-confidence. While self-confidence means trusting your abilities, self-doubt means questioning your abilities.

EFT Tapping for Overthinking

overthinking

We ruin simple things by thinking too much and cooking up thousands of what-if scenarios in our minds. Thinking too much about something makes us see all that could go wrong, and hence we quit the journey too soon, which brings about feelings of not being good enough.

self-criticism:

Often, we judge ourselves too much and focus more on our limitations. We tend to talk to ourselves harshly, and that makes us feel like we are not capable enough

Self-Criticism

feeling ashamed:

“What will they think of me?”, “How will it look if I do this?” Our fear of being judged by others makes us feel ashamed to do things we want to.

Feeling ashamed

“If you really put a small value upon yourself,

rest assured that the world will not raise your price.”

Putting ourselves down

putting ourselves down:

Downplaying yourself and thinking of yourself as someone who doesn’t have much to offer makes you feel low and insignificant.

EFT Tapping for anxiety and depression

Anxiety or depression:

If you have been going through issues like anxiety or depression, it may feel like a dark place to be in. Such conditions tend to make one feel lost and hopeless, thereby leading to a loss of confidence.

past negative experiences:

If you have experienced negative events like discrimination, bullying, harassment or humiliation, verbal or psychological abuse, or early childhood trauma, you may have major issues with your confidence.

Past experiences and trauma

poor self-esteem:

Self esteem is defined by how much you like and appreciate yourself, and how worthy you think you are. Self-esteem and self-confidence go hand in hand. A person with low self-esteem doesn’t appreciate themselves and hence don’t trust their abilities, leading to low self-confidence.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO BOOST SELF-CONFIDENCE?

Consciously working on improving your self-confidence might seem difficult at first because of many underlying fears. But taking small steps gradually can help you.

Here are a few tips that will surely help you take your confidence to the next level:

Celebrate the small wins as well as the big.

Too often, we set very high standards for ourselves and focus only on the end result. We forget to acknowledge the steps that we have taken to reach the end result.

So, remember to appreciate yourself for every little improvement that you make every day. It can be as small as making your bed. This will also help you quieten your self-critical inner voice.

Write down your 100 best qualities!

Sounds impossible, doesn't it? Well, writing about your good qualities might sound odd (we are seldom encouraged to praise ourselves, after all), but setting out all the things you are proud of and the attributes you admire in yourself, is a great way to boost your self-confidence.

And it does not necessarily have to be a quality, it can be any small or big situation you remember, where you did something good. Say it out loud as you write.

This is because the words we use form a connection to our nervous system. So, if say positive things to ourselves then we are building the muscle of self confidence.

If you find it hard to get started, imagine that you are writing about your best friend. Think about why she/he is your best friend and which of her/his qualities you value the most.

Adopt the body language of confidence.

Our mind and body are interconnected, and each has an impact on the other. Hence, our body language plays an important role in determining how we feel.

Try this little experiment on yourself: Put a pen horizontally between your teeth, and try to feel sad. Can you? Now, put your hand on your forehead and try to feel happy. How does that feel?

If you want an instant boost of confidence, keep your head up and back straight, and breathe in a relaxed manner.

Stop worrying about what others think and start focusing on yourself.

Many of us become very self-conscious about what others will think of us when in reality they are not concerned at all. This is referred to as the ‘spotlight effect’ by social psychologists.

The spotlight effect is the tendency to overvalue how much others notice us.

In fact, people will anyway find a way to judge you if that’s what they want to do. So, isn’t it better to just live your life the way you want to?

Let go of the past hurts and disappointments.

Many of us may have faced some negative experiences, like having failed at something, rejections, or a traumatic event. Such experiences may take away our confidence and discourage us from moving forward.

The famous American coach Tony Robbins says, "Just because something happened in the past, doesn’t mean it will happen in the future."

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a very effective way to release your past hurts as it uncovers the past beliefs, limiting thoughts, and clears them from the root cause, and you can start to embed positive phrases and positive energy into your daily life, and feel confident as a result.

Make peace with failure.

Fear of failure stops us from making a decision, and moving forward in life. There’s a wonderful quote by Oprah Winfrey that I like to keep in mind.

She says, “Failure is the universe nudging you in the right direction.”

Mistakes may happen and we may fail. But we can always choose to learn from it and try again. Trying something and failing at it is much better than remaining stuck because of the fear of failing.

Start the day with positive affirmations.

People with low self-confidence tend to have a strong inner critic. If you want to feel confident, you must talk to yourself lovingly.

Developing a habit of saying affirmations to yourself will help you rewire your brain and build your confidence. Here a few examples of affirmations:

  • I love and accept myself just as I am
  • I am brilliant and beautiful
  • I can achieve anything I dream of
  • I am confident and empowered
  • I am learning and growing
  • I am loved

HOW DOES EFT TAPPING HELP IN BUILDING SELF-CONFIDENCE?

EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques is a healing modality that works with a holistic approach on several kinds of physical as well psychological issues.

The basic process of EFT Tapping involves tapping on specific points on the body which are based on the ancient science of Acupuncture. Tapping these points while speaking out certain statements balances the disrupted energy in the body and leads to deep healing.

Our limitations, limiting beliefs, fears, doubt and low self-esteem can hold us back and keep us small, resulting in low self-confidence. We may have formed these negative belief systems due to our past experiences.

All these issues can be effortlessly resolved with Emotional Freedom Techniques. The first step is to uncover what is holding us back and what is limiting us. These can be blocks or limitations and can be uncovered by listening to our self-talk. Some examples of negative self-talk are as follows:

  • I am too scared
  • I will fail
  • No one wants to talk to me
  • I am not attractive
  • l find it hard to sell
  • I am scared of rejection
  • It is so much safer playing small
  • If I become successful, people will take advantage of me
  • I feel stupid
  • People will laugh at me
  • I do not want to get hurt again
  • Life is too hard – not enough time
  • I am too fat
  • It will never change
  • I cannot do it
  • I am stuck in a rut
  • I feel lost
  • What’s the point?

Sometimes fear holds us back from actively going after what we want. Tapping away the fears frees us from our limitations and forges a new way of being with more confidence, self-assurance and empowerment. As our self-talk changes, our life changes for the better.

EFT TAPPING FOR SELF-CONFIDENCE

EFT Tapping for self-confidence is an alternative therapeutic method that has proven to be long lasting and effective. The sample procedure of EFT Tapping for overcoming low self-confidence is as follows:

Step 1

Identify the physical sensations

Explore the physical sensations in the body associated with the feeling of low self-confidence. To understand the physical nature of low self-confidence, think of the answers to the below questions, and notice where you feel it in the body. Ask yourself the following:

  • Where in the body do you experience the feeling of low confidence?
  • What is the colour, size, texture, shape of it? (Try to imagine)
  • What are the sensations like? How does low confidence feel? For example, rough or smooth.

Step 2

Measure the intensity

Now, measure the level of your confidence by rating it on a scale of 0-10. Ask yourself: “What number is the feeling of low confidence at?” where 10 is very high and 0 is very low. Just go with whatever comes up in your mind spontaneously, without thinking too much about it.

Step 3

Start tapping on the side of your hand (Karate Chop)

Tap on The Karate Chop using the setup statement, for example:

“Even though I feel _____________ and I can feel it in my (part of the body)________________________ and it’s at a number _____________ and it makes me feel _______________ I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

(Repeat 3 times)

Step 4

Tap on the facial and upper body EFT Tapping points

Use the below-listed phrases to tap on the facial, upper body, and finger EFT Tapping Points:

  •  Eyebrow: My confidence drops when …..
  • Temple: I feel it in my …..
  • Under eye: It’s at a number …..
  • Under nose: It makes me feel …..
  • Chin: It’s in my ….. at a number …..
  • Collarbone: It makes me feel …..
  • Under the arm: So …..
  • Thumb: So …..
  • Index Finger: Less confident because …..
  • Middle Finger: I feel it in my …..
  • Little finger: So …..

Step 5

Complete the sequence by tapping on the side of your hand

Close the sequence by coming back to the EFT Karate Chop Tapping Points and repeating the setup statement once again:

“Even though I feel __________ and I feel it in my ___________ and it’s at a number _______ and it makes me feel _______, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Step 6

Breathe and relax

Take a gentle breath in, release it out, and have a sip of water.

Step 7

Test yourself

Test the level of your confidence. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What number is it at now?
  • What happened?
  • How does it make you feel now?

If it has reduced to a level you feel happy with, you can stop. Or you can repeat this process if you feel like the number could come down a little more.

Note: You can also tap on memories and associated emotions that come up. Discover past experiences of feeling under-confident and clear them. To reveal the memories linked to the feeling of low self-confidence, you can ask questions like:

  • When have you felt a lack of confidence before?
  • What does that feeling remind you of?
  • When is it that you don’t experience low confidence?
  • What can trigger and bring about the feeling of low confidence?

Step 8

Explore the limiting belief

Explore any other limiting beliefs that prevented you from becoming feeling confident. Limiting beliefs are conscious or unconscious thoughts that prevent us from growing and achieving our goals. They are usually responsible for self-sabotage, procrastination and low self-esteem in an individual.

Try to think of the limiting beliefs you may be having. Then shift them from negative to positive. For example, substitute “I don’t think I can do it” to “I am capable of doing it well.”

Step 9

Close with positive tapping for Self-Confidence

An example of a positive tapping statement is:

Even though I feel so nervous about this, I choose to believe that I will perform well.”

EFT Tapping and Self-Confidence

The following are some examples of statements to overcome blocks and limitations to become successful and confident:

  • “Even though I feel scared to go after what I really want, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to be kind to myself, taking baby steps to steadily do what I enjoy.”
  •  "Even though I am scared to try what I’d like to do (as I may not be good at it) I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to understand that not being good at the beginning is a part of the learning process.”
  • ”Even though I’m afraid I’ll look foolish and be judged by others for what I try to do, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to put my needs first – and not worry about the judgments of others.”
  • ”Even though I don’t want to make any mistakes, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to know it is more important to attempt fearlessly than to do nothing.”
  • ”Even though I don’t want to be distance from my family and friends by honestly wanting a lot of money, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to stand up for what I feel is right for me regardless of what those close to me think.”
  • ”Even though it feels safe and familiar being poor and there is a comfortable companionship, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to step out of my comfort zone and accept I will be alone for a bit until I attract more like-minded people who understand me.”
  •  ”Even though I feel terribly alone and all by myself in my wanting more money, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to feel uncomfortable for the time being and accept my initial discomfort.”
  • ”Even though I have a burning desire to change but I just can’t, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to push through my discomfort and seek new experiences.”
  • ”Even though I am comfortable in my unhappiness, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to be open to being happy as my natural state.”
  • ”Even though I don’t know how to initiate change, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. I choose to trust the first step will be made known to me if I listen.”

“Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.”
