EFT Tapping For Pain: Transforming Your Wellbeing
We often associate physical pain with the body. While it's true that pain could be a symptom of something wrong with your body, that's not always the case. In this blog, you will learn about different types of pain and how to use EFT Tapping for pain relief.
All of us have suffered from some type of pain, whether it was due to an injury or another ailment. As much as we'd like to avoid or deny the existence of it, we can't help but succumb to this unpleasant, uncomfortable, and distressing feeling that tells us that something is wrong.
"Pain is such an uncomfortable feeling that even a tiny amount of it is enough to ruin your enjoyment."

TYPES OF PAIN AND THEIR CAUSES
When you experience pain physically, it may be continuous, may start and stop frequently, or it may occur only under some conditions. It may occur suddenly and last for a short period of time. Or it may develop gradually and last over several months or years.
Pain may be specific to a particular part of the body, or it may be generalised, such as the overall body aches associated with the flu.
The different types of physical pain are listed below (1):
- Acute Pain
- Chronic Pain
- Nociceptive Pain
- Neuropathic Pain
- Functional Pain
1. Acute Pain
Acute pain develops suddenly and lasts for a short period, usually 3 to 6 months. It is caused by injuries, illnesses, or medical procedures, and can be sharp and severe but usually resolves within days, weeks, or months.
2. Chronic Pain
Chronic pain persists for a long time, spanning several months or years, and may come and go frequently. Conditions like cancer and arthritis can cause this type of pain, and sometimes it persists even after the original injury has healed.
3. Nociceptive Pain
Nociceptive pain is characterized by severe, throbbing pain resulting from tissue damage, such as cuts, bruises, burns, or fractures. It can be acute or chronic, depending on the underlying cause, which may include illnesses like arthritis or osteoporosis.
4. Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain is caused by nerve damage due to conditions like diabetes, slipped disk, cancer, or multiple sclerosis. It leads to stabbing or prickling sensations and increased sensitivity to hot/cold temperatures, touch, and movement.
5. Functional Pain
Functional pain is a type of chronic pain that occurs without any apparent injury, chronic illness, or body damage. Examples include chronic cardiac chest pain and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Factors like poor posture, nutrition, physical activity, or sleep may contribute to functional pain.
Traditional solutions for pain relief completely miss considering the underlying causes of pain. Identifying the specific type of pain helps in developing an effective treatment plan.
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) tapping is suggested as a clinically proven method to reduce stress, tension, anxiety, and past trauma to promote overall health and well-being.
HOW DOES EFT TAPPING HELP IN HEALING CHRONIC PAIN?
While all of our physical pain problems can be solved or aided by the usage of various medically prescribed drugs and therapies, we must also keep in mind that those methods may only provide temporary relief and turn out to be harmful to us in the long run.
In order to avoid all of this, and to address the issue from its root cause, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) happens to be a very powerful alternative healing therapy to heal any sort of physical or mental pain that people usually experience.
EFT Tapping is highly effective in relieving chronic pain by stimulating certain meridian points because it helps people release the unresolved negative emotions that are keeping the body in a stressed state.
By tapping to lift the negative emotional charge from specific events and other past and current issues, the brain learns that it is safe to relax tense muscles and lessen nerve sensitivity. That's when the body can heal itself (2).
EFT aims to find out the root cause of your pain, your emotions, your stress, and your traumas. Once you work on those and release the emotional distress linked with your pain, your body automatically begins to heal itself.
HOW TO HEAL PHYSICAL PAIN WITH EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE?
Step 1:
First, use EFT tapping on what it feels like to feel the pain:
Explore the physical sensations in the body associated with the pain and use the physical tension tapping process to reduce the sensations.
1.
To get started with pain management, begin by investigating the physical nature of pain:
Connect with the pain and notice where you feel it in the body. Then use the EFT Tapping for Physical Tension taught in detail during the EFT Practitioner Training to clear the surface feelings and feel calmer.
Briefly, you can begin by asking yourself the following questions to explore further:
Where in the body do you experience the pain?
What is the colour, texture, size, and shape of the pain in the body?
What are the sensations like? For example, rough or smooth.
2.
Measure the level of your pain:
Now, measure the level of pain by asking,
"What number is the physical pain at, where 10 is really high and 1 is not high at all."
Go with whatever comes up naturally. Don't think much about it!
3.
Begin by tapping on the Karate Chop or side of the hand EFT Tapping points:
"Even though I feel the pain physically and I feel it in my [part of the body where there is pain] and its at a number 5 and it's orange in colour and it feels rough, I deeply and completely love and accept myself." (Repeat 3 times).
4.
Tap on the facial and upper body EFT Tapping points:
Use the following phrases:
- Eyebrow: This pain...
- Side of the eye: So painful...
- Under the eye: Pain in my chest...
- Under the nose: It's a red colour...
- Chin: At a number 6...
- Collarbone: So rough...
- Under the arm: This pain...
- Thumb: I feel it in my chest...
- Index finger: So painful...
- Middle finger: Really painful...
- Little finger: The colour red...
5.
Close the sequence:
Come back to the EFT Karate Chop tapping points and repeat once,
"Even though I feel pain physically and I feel it in my chest and it's at a number 5 and it's orange in colour and it feels rough, I deeply and completely love and accept myself."
6.
Relax:
Take a gentle breath in, then let it out and take a sip of water.
7.
Test:
At the end of the EFT Tapping, you can ask yourself the following questions:
- What number is the pain at now?
- What happened?
- How does it make you feel?
You can repeat this process by going back to Step 1 if you feel like the number could come down a little more.
Step 2:
Discover past experiences of feeling pain and clear them:
To uncover the memories linked to the physical symptoms of pain, you can ask questions like:
- When have you felt these sensations before?
- What do these sensations remind you of?
- When did the sensations start? What happened?
- Was there ever a time when you did not experience these symptoms?
- What can trigger and bring on the symptoms?
Identify past events linked to your pain and resolve it with the help of tapping therapy.
You can ask the following questions:
- When have you felt the pain before?
- What happens to trigger the pain?
- Who or what triggers the feeling of pain?
These questions will identify your past experiences associated with the pain.
Step 3:
Explore a limiting belief that prevents you from being pain-free:
Limiting beliefs can be classified as conscious or unconscious thoughts that end up becoming responsible for self-sabotage, procrastination, and low self-esteem, in an individual.
For physical pain, first, uncover the limiting beliefs at the surface level. Then replace the negative beliefs with more empowering ones.
For example,
“Something bad is going to happen.” to “Everything is going to be ok!"
"It's not safe" to "I am safe now."
Step 4:
Close with positive EFT Tapping for physical pain relief:
Examples of a positive tapping sequence are as follows:
“Even though I felt pain, now, I am open to feeling pain-free.”
“Even though I was living with this pain for many months, now, I open myself to the possibility of being pain-free."
In the reminder phrase, repeating a few sentences does not mean that you are trying to convince yourself and believe in false affirmations.
It just means that you're allowing yourself to confront and deal with feelings of pain and pessimism, by accepting and validating them. In simple words, EFT allows your body's energy to tune itself into a more positive flow that ends up lasting for a really long time.
EVIDENCES PROVING THE EFFICACY OF EFT TAPPING
EFFECTS OF EFT ON THE REDUCTION OF CHRONIC PAIN IN ADULTS
A 2014 pilot study was conducted to examine the effects of EFT on pain reduction in adults with chronic pain.
50 adults with chronic pain participated in a 3-day workshop to learn EFT. Pain was assessed using the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and the Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI) before and after treatment and at 1-month and 6-month follow-ups.
At the 1-month follow up, significant reductions were found in each PCS item score (rumination, magnification, helplessness) and total score. Further improvements were observed in pain severity, interference, life control, affective distress, and dysfunctional composite on the MPI.
At the 6-month follow-up, reductions were maintained on the PCS and participants reported an improved sense of control and coping ability with chronic pain. EFT helped participants reduce pain severity and improved their ability to live with chronic pain (6).
PAIN AND ANXIETY REDUCTION IN FIRST STAGE MATERNITY MOTHERS
A 2017 study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of EFT intervention with spiritual intervention in reducing pain and anxiety during the first stage of childbirth.
36 mothers who gave birth at a health centre were divided into two groups: EFT intervention and spiritual intervention control group. Their anxiety levels were assessed using a numeric rating scale.
Between the two groups, EFT intervention demonstrated a superior reduction in pain intensity and maternal anxiety compared to spiritual intervention (5).
Yet another study was conducted to examine the efficacy of Emotional Freedom Techniques in reducing pain perception, increasing acceptance, coping ability, and health-related quality of life in people suffering from fibromyalgia (4).
An eight-week online EFT treatment program was administered to 86 women, who were on sick leave for at least 3 months.
As a result, significant improvements were observed in the treatment group for variables such as pain, anxiety, depression, performance problems, and stress symptoms.
HEALED BACK PAIN WITH EFT TAPPING IN 17 MINUTES
One of our participants, Dr Rajesh CM healed his back pain completely after attending EFT training and now routinely helps his patients heal from body pain with results in only a single sitting.
Here's what he has to say: "I healed my back pain in 17 minutes and now help others. After attending EFT Training for pain relief with Vitality Living College, I became even more powerful and effective in my private practice.
I now have 5 to 6 patients daily and every patient is satisfied through EFT Tapping.
"For any kind of persistent pain, for example in the knee, back, or head I am getting good results. The best part is, in a single sitting my patients get more than 70% and sometimes 100% pain relief. In my own case before attending EFT Training, I used to have severe back pain and after attending the EFT Training session it has gone completely."
CONCLUSION
When individuals decide to resort to the Emotional Freedom Technique, they not only get rid of their pain but also look at life in a more positive way, which provides them with the strength to deal with any other mental or physical distress that comes their way.
In a nutshell, EFT is a very powerful and effective tool for relieving any kind of physical or mental pain and discomfort. This technique has also proven to be effective when it comes to chronic pain.
EFT has provided relief to thousands of people who have been suffering for years. If you or someone you know is experiencing pain and unable to heal from it, EFT Tapping might be the solution you're looking for.
