HOW ARE FOOD CRAVINGS AND BODY WEIGHT CONNECTED?

A food craving is defined by a compelling desire for a specific type of eatable, often occurring on a recurring basis.

As proposed by the conditioning model, hunger pangs can be triggered by external factors (such as watching television) or internal cues (like feeling sad) in conjunction with the consumption of certain foods. These hunger pangs are estimated to contribute to nearly 11% of the variance in eating behaviors and subsequent increases in weight (1).

When a craving takes hold, one's capacity for making rational choices diminishes as brain chemistry takes control. This propensity can lead to overindulgence in favorite foods, subsequently resulting in an increase in weight.

The release of stress hormones, when one feels anxious or experiences psychological distress, may inadvertently trigger these hunger pangs. Furthermore, issues such as depression can contribute to hunger pangs, with individuals seeking solace in comfort foods to alleviate negative emotions.

CAUSES OF OVER-EATING

Overeating, a complex phenomenon, is often influenced by a myriad of factors spanning biological, psychological, social, and emotional realms.

Understanding its causes and impacts is crucial for anyone seeking to manage their consumption habits and overall well-being.

Causes of over-eating, Weight loss goals

1.

Biological Causes

Biologically, our stress response plays a pivotal role. The release of stress hormone - cortisol, can lead to increased appetite, especially for calorie-dense "comfort" foods. This biological reaction is hardwired from our ancestors who needed to store energy in times of stress.

2.

Psychological Causes

Overeating can also stem from emotional turmoil and depression. Feelings of sadness or anxiety can trigger a desire for soothing through comestibles. The process of emotional bingeing is often driven by an attempt to regulate fear and alleviate psychological discomfort.

3.

Social Causes

Our social environment significantly influences bingeing patterns. Social gatherings, celebrations, and even cultural norms can encourage overindulgence. Peer pressure and the availability of high-calorie, palatable foods in social settings contribute to overeating.

4.

Emotional Causes

Emotions, too, are closely intertwined with overeating. Stress, a primary contributor, leads to an increase in cortisol amount, which triggers hankerings for calorie-rich foods. In times of emotional unease, individuals may seek comfort and distraction in overeating, leading to a cycle of feeling frustrated and seeking solace through edibles.

IMPACTS OF OVER-EATING

The impacts of overeating reverberate across physical, mental, and emotional well-being:

1.

Weight Gain

Overeating inevitably leads you to gain weight as excess calories are stored as fat. Elevated cortisol levels from chronic stress contribute to the accumulation of abdominal fat.

2.

Health Risks

Consistently elevated cortisol amounts can lead to health issues like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and compromised immune function.

3.

Psychological Effects

Overeating can exacerbate depression symptoms and contribute to a cycle of emotional distress. The guilt and shame that often follow can perpetuate the cycle, leading to a heightened sense of frustration.

4.

Self-Esteem

Frequent overeating can impact self-esteem negatively. Weight accumulation and the feeling of lack of control can contribute to lower self-worth and diminished confidence.

5.

Relationships

The social impacts of overeating may lead to feelings of isolation and difficulty in social interactions due to low self-esteem or physique image issues.

HOW TO ELIMINATE HUNGER PANGS?

EFT Tapping points to eliminate hunger pangs, EFT for weight loss

It's all too familiar—those few extra pounds that seem to creep in after special occasions, like birthdays or vacations. Blame it on those relentless hunger pangs that appear unexpectedly, catching us off guard and leaving us defenseless.

Pizza, chocolate, cake, chips, and ice cream—these indulgences are often the culprits because of their high sugar, fat, and carbohydrate content. These hankerings can derail weight loss efforts and even trigger bingeing.

Mindful eating and balanced meals are a strategic way to approach your weight loss journey. Other than that, the solution I recommend addressing the core of weight accumulation and enable effective weight loss is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).

This alternative therapy helps address deep-rooted emotional connections to hankerings, clearing the way for healthier choices and weight loss. By doing so, it uncovers and clears the root causes of these patterns, allowing for a sustainable transformation in consumption habits and overall well-being.

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE (EFT) FOR LOSING WEIGHT

The revolutionary concept of EFT Tapping for weight loss doesn't solely revolve around restraining oneself from specific foods.

It entails delving into the emotional freedom technique, targeting deep-seated emotions and psychological triggers.

By addressing the root cause—the emotional component—EFT Tapping contributes to a holistic transformation, facilitating sustainable weight loss and improved overall well-being.

EFT Tapping steps to overcome emotional bingeing and lose weight:

1.

Begin by identifying the food that triggers your emotional bingeing. Consider items like chocolates, cakes, samosas, chips, or pizza.

2.

Place the chosen item on a tissue and experience it through your senses. Smell and touch it without tasting it. Engage with the substance, but do not eat it.

3.

Reflect on the sensory attributes of the item—its smell, touch, appearance, and feel. Acknowledge its qualities, such as "It's so crunchy and sweet!"

4.

Apply gentle tapping to the meridian points while uttering the exact feelings you associate with the substance. For instance, say, "Even though it's so crunchy and sweet, I love and accept myself."

5.

Continue tapping until the intensity of your emotional response lessens. Use the karate chop and acupressure points, focusing on the emotions associated with the item. While using the karate chop point, start reinforcing positive thoughts.

6.

Explore your feelings around the substance's smell and recall instances when you haven't felt the same way before.

7.

If emotional bingeing is a factor, delve into memories linked to the craving. Smell the item again and notice how its scent might alter—for instance, chocolates smelling like chemicals or chips resembling oil.

8.

Recognise that emotional bingeing might be filling an emotional void like comfort, safety, love, or protection.

9.

During the tapping, make sure to target certain points while using positive affirmations to support your progress.

10.

Repeat tapping across various meridian points, emphasising positive affirmations and the tapping.

11.

Focus on releasing negative emotions, allowing positive energies to flow.

12.

Tap the meridian points (especially under the arm) gently and rest assured that the process is guiding you toward relieving emotional pain.

13.

Continue tapping on different points, engaging with the tapping process wholeheartedly.

14.

Utilise positive affirmations consistently, reiterating your commitment to weight loss and emotional well-being.

15.

Remember that tapping can be instrumental in alleviating emotional pain and fostering healthier habits.

By incorporating these steps into your routine, you can address emotional bingeing, tap into acupressure points, and utilise tapping for weight loss effectively.

This comprehensive approach combines sensory engagement, meridian point stimulation, and positive affirmations to help you achieve your goals and relieve emotional distress.

EFT TAPPING FOR FOOD CRAVINGS

451 Participants were randomly assigned to an eight-week online EFT intervention group or waitlist control group. The sample comprised primarily of women (96%) aged between 41 and 60 years. In the treatment group, 65% ate their craved foods daily and were obese (2).

Post-intervention analyses revealed significant reductions on all measures for 314 participants in the EFT condition with moderate to high practical significance for the online intervention.

However, there were no significant differences for 137 participants in the waitlist baseline group. The participants in the EFT group were found to have treatment gains in a 6-month and 12-month follow-up.

In conclusion, the study's results established online EFT as an accessible and effective instrument to help in the control of food cravings and the management of body weight (2).

EFT TAPPING FOR SUSTAINED WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Individuals participating in a longitudinal intervention program spanning 2 years were initially assigned randomly to either a treatment or waitlist group (3).

The treatment cohort engaged in a self-paced online EFT program consisting of 7 modules distributed over 8 weeks, with the aim of achieving weight loss. Conversely, the waitlist group did not receive any prescribed treatment.

The findings demonstrated the efficacy of EFT in diminishing persistent food cravings, reducing the perceived intensity of food desires, and enhancing the ability to adhere to dietary restrictions, all of which were maintained over the course of 2 years.

Additionally, the group that underwent the EFT treatment exhibited a notable reduction in hankerings for carbohydrates and fast food, accompanied by a significant improvement in their body mass index in comparison to the waitlist group.

Conclusion

These cravings may not be solely related to eating habits but might also have underlying profound emotional triggers. As an illustration, I recognised that my yearning for a chocolate bar was linked to feelings of being unloved.

It remains imperative to delve into the root causes of such cravings and address them at their source for lasting and sustainable outcomes.

I am still a work in progress; however, I now know how I can live a happier, healthier craving free life. I still enjoy that occasional bar of chocolate, the guilt I had when I ate that is no longer there.
